The California Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (CANA) is pleased to invite you to our upcoming CANA 2022 Annual Fall Meeting, held Friday-Sunday, October 28-30, 2022 at the Westin Rancho Mirage Golf Resort & Spa.

We are thrilled to be returning to in-person meetings and all of the CE, networking, and exhibits that you know and love at CANA meetings.

Day 1 – Friday, October 28

12:00 — 12:15 PM | Welcome Remarks

12:15 — 1:15 PM | Wellness and Suicide Prevalence and Prevention for SRNAs

In order to investigate the causes and prevention of suicide in student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs), a mixed methods survey study was conducted of all program directors and a sample of randomly chosen SRNAs. Results indicated that SRNAs and faculty have elevated stress levels. There was an association between suicidal ideation in SRNAs and depression, lack of perceived agency, and elevated anxiety in the classroom. SRNAs reported mental health challenges, depression, and anxiety. Wellness is a never-ending, essential, and continually evolving effort. In an effort to share the results of the study and continue to educate those who are able to help others in need, this lecture will confirm suicide is preventable with compassionate intervention.

1:15 — 2:15 PM | Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems in Anesthesiology and Preoperative Medicine (Part 1)

This lecture will review the potential of AI and autonomous systems in Perioperative settings.

2:45 — 3:30 PM | Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems in Anesthesiology and Preoperative Medicine (Part 2)

This lecture will review the potential of AI and autonomous systems in Perioperative settings.

3:30 — 4:00 PM | Thriving in an ACT Practice Model

The presentation will elucidate the dynamics of working in an Anesthesia Care Team (ACT) practice model. An ACT is a combination of physician anesthesiologists paired with CRNAs, anesthesiology trainees, and/or anesthesia assistants. In this model, the CRNA functions as the primary caretaker of the patient 100% of the time throughout the perioperative phases. The session will include a review of the various anesthesia coverage models and highlight aspects that can aid with thriving in an ACT practice.

Innovator (noun): a person who introduces new methods, ideas, or products. CRNAs are so much more than their practice. In this session, participants will hear from CRNAs who’ve taken their experience and their skills and applied it to products and endeavors outside of the practice of nurse anesthesia. Presenters will discuss how their idea came to fruition from ideation to development to execution and profitability.

1:00 — 2:00 PM | Task Force Report: Considerations for Full Practice Authority Among Nurse Anesthetists in California

The 2021-22 CANA Board of Directors designated a cohort of CRNAs, representing varying types of practice, with forming a task force to investigate and explore full practice authority for nurse anesthetists in California. The group spent nearly a year in discovery mode, with an aim to better understand the needs of CRNAs and how best to define how full practice authority should be defined in California. The task force has compiled a set of succinct recommendations for the BOD and membership to consider, in hopes the future of nurse anesthesia practice in California will be impacted for the better with an increase in the scope of practice.

Abundant studies have documented the negative impact of burnout. Burnout lowers quality of life, performance level, and organizational commitment, and sometimes increases the desire to leave a profession altogether. But how do you know you’re burned out and how can you help prevent it? This session will provide you with the basic skills to help identify, combat, and even prevent burnout.
