Solo anesthesia provider in an outpatient GI facility. Also I provide anesthesia practice, management, and legal consulting services.
How do you balance and manage the stress of your full-time job, BOD position, and family life?
Having done it for so long it is second nature, plus being able to compartmentalize different aspects of my life. Also, an incredibly understanding and forgiving husband!
What is your favorite anesthesia specialty?
At this point in my career, I enjoy the business of anesthesia, nurse anesthesia education, and simulation the most. But I have mostly enjoyed my clinic practice of cosmetics, neuro, ophthalmology and orthopedics.
Is there any research, thesis, practice projects, missions, or other anesthesia related work you would like to share with our community?
• My doctoral dissertation focused on the increased incidence of wrong-patient, wrong-site surgery (WPWSS) since the introduction of the Surgical Time Out Protocol, and the failure of voluntary and punitive reporting mechanisms in the reduction of medical error.
• My masters thesis looked at reusable blood pressure cuffs as mechanisms of bacterial, viral and infectious organism transmission.
• I am fortunate enough to have been able to go to Belize to teach nurse anesthesia students, and lead educational delegations of nurse anesthetists in both Cuba and Vietnam.
• I have an interest in Human Factors application in simulation, and have had the opportunity to integrate those interests with students during their anesthesia educational programs. I look forward to being able to do more of this in the future.
