Ketamine is one of the most widely used analgesics in the world. It has fallen out of and back into favor multiple times over the last century. While it has a rollercoaster past, Ketamine and other NMDA antagonists are finding a place in a world where more and more providers are decreasing their opioid dependancy. Come explore with us the use of ketamine as a pain adjunct in the modern surgical setting.

Sunday, October 17

Welcome remarks provided by CANA Programs Committee Chair, Daniel Bell, RN, CRNA, DNP.

This brief lecture will touch on the physiology of inflammation, the difference between selective and nonselective NSIADs, side effects, cost, and other considerations for anesthesia providers.

Presented by: Julia Harris, MSN, CRNA, FAANA

Finances is undeniably a predominant factor in shaping healthcare delivery in the United States. A basic premise of implementing institutional change is the ability to communicate in a way that is compelling to facility administrators whose primary focus is cost and profit. This lecture will assist the learner in understanding the fiscal considerations of traditional vs. opioid-free anesthesia (OFA), post-operative pain management techniques, and influential factors of in-patient length of stay. The facilitation of OFA practice and adoption from a systems perspective is also discussed. Billing for OFA is a novel, emerging means of increasing professional fee revenue for OFA providers. Multiple insurance providers are reimbursing for OFA, including Medicare. This lecture will review the current OFA billing statistics, suggest steps to increase OFA reimbursement rates on first attempt and what potential standardization and expansions may be ahead.

Important Notification:

After careful consideration, due to the ongoing risks and concerns with COVID-19 variants, CANA has decided to move our Annual Fall Meeting 2021 online. We will offer the program in a fully-virtual format on Saturday-Sunday, October 16-17, 2021. We look forward to seeing many of our CRNA, NAR, and RN colleagues online for the fantastic program of educational sessions for Class A CE Credit, as well as the interactive features you’ve come to know and love on the Hopin platform: live chat with other participants, a virtual exhibit hall, networking breakouts, and more. See below for details and to register now for the virtual meeting!

As much as we miss seeing everyone in-person, the health and safety of our community must continue to come first. We are hopeful that we will be able to return to in-person meetings in Spring 2022 and will keep members apprised as details are confirmed. Please note that the CANA PAC fundraiser event in Berkeley will also be postponed to Spring 2022.

Those who have already registered for the Fall 2021 in-person will be contacted directly to transfer or refund your registration, since the in-person meeting option will no longer be offered. Participants are responsible for cancelling their own hotel and travel reservations.
