Where do you currently practice?
I have been at LA County-USC and USC’s Keck Medical Center, since I finished training at USC in 2001. The 15 years before that I was a CCRN, mostly at those same places.
What are your favorite cases or anesthesia specialty?
We see anything from simple outpatient cases to trauma and burns. Part of my ICU experience was in burns. My frustration with trying to control those patients’ pain was part of what guided me to anesthesia.
What is the most rewarding part of being a CRNA?
Beyond working with patients, working with learners keeps the experience fresh. It’s very rewarding to support a new SRNA, paramedic, or resident as they connect the dots of concepts, procedures, and earning their patient’s trust.
What are your passions outside of work?
The 15 years prior to health care I was a working drummer and singer, all styles. In a few years I think I can retire and concentrate on writing and recording in a home studio.
Is there any research, thesis, practice projects, missions, or other anesthesia related work you would like to share with our community?
One more thing: Your professional organization is what protects and advances your practice. At least be a member, and consider joining a committee or running for the board. There are many more struggles ahead.
